The whaling ship Bark Kathleen was rammed and sunk by an enraged bull sperm whale on March 17, 1902, in the South Atlantic. The whale struck the vessel below the waterline, causing it to take on water rapidly. The captain, Thomas Jenkins, ordered his crew to abandon ship in lifeboats, including his wife, and they were later rescued.
